Some time ago, our house alarm was on the fritz, and I decided on a whim to set up the Fake TV as I walked out the door (we don’t usually use it, unless we’re out of town). This Fake TV can prevent your real one from being stolen. I stood outside my living room one night and compared the lights from Fake TV to those emitted by my television. The phony show matched the real thing almost identically, though the alternating lights from Fake TV flashed a bit more frantically. It would give a potential burglar the impression that you're watching something frenzied, like “Cops,” and that's not a bad impression to give.
